In the heart of Isère, at the southern outskirts of the Grenoble metropolitan area, Vizille enjoys a central location where the roads to Oisans, Matheysine and the Belledonne massif meet.
The small town stretches along the right bank of the Romanche, between the town centre, residential and business areas, farmland and wooded mountain foothills.
Its history can be seen in the remains of the royal Château du Roi, dating from the 10th century, and in the Château Lesdiguières, built in the 17th century and owned by the Isère department, home also to the Museum of the French Revolution and set in a remarkable park.
Its many canals, inherited from an industrial and working-class past shaped by tanneries, weaving mills, paper mills and metallurgy, are now a welcome source of coolness for its 7,400 residents.
The town hosts many outdoor sporting events, such as the L’Echappée Belle trail race and the La Claveyrolat cycling event, held in tribute to the champion from Vizille.
Vizille is working to revitalise its area through the promotion of its heritage, innovation and quality of life.
