Braz Afonso: "I took a chance"

“It’s brilliant, when I think about this season, where I’ve come from and the fact that this is only my second year on the World Tour; but there’s also a bit of disappointment that the race didn’t unfold quite as I’d hoped. I took a chance by breaking away with Baptiste Veistroffer to try and get a head start, hoping that the riders behind wouldn’t really catch on. And in the end they did catch on, and then I couldn’t keep up with [Anthon Charmig] at the top of the final climb. I was knackered, perhaps because I’d put in too much effort earlier on. But it’s only by trying that you get it right. Experience comes bit by bit. I wouldn’t say I got carried away, but I gave it a go and it didn’t work out.”
