Just a few kilometres from Roanne, the village of Perreux sits on a clay promontory above the lush countryside of the Roannais region.
Once a strategic stronghold of the Lords of Beaujeu against the Counts of Forez, this medieval village still bears the marks of its history through the ages. In 2022, Perreux became the fifth Village of Character in the Roannais region.
This label highlights the municipality’s commitment to protecting its old buildings, landscapes and history while offering visitors a high-quality welcome. It also reflects the desire to pass this heritage on to future generations.
Among the village’s emblematic features, the medieval tower of Perreux holds a central place. A vestige of the past, it bears witness to the area’s early history and stands as a remarkable landmark in the landscape. Together with the stone houses and old farmhouses, this tower gives the village a unique character and an atmosphere steeped in history.
Inside the church, in the North Chapel, you can admire the magnificent flamboyant Gothic vaulting. As you leave, take in the superb view of the Romanesque chapel. It adjoins the town hall, which is a former 19th-century boarding school, built by nuns using stones from the castle. You can also catch sight of a very beautiful 18th-century timber-framed townhouse.
The village lanes and centre encourage leisurely walks, offering the chance to explore preserved heritage in a harmonious setting. The surrounding countryside, with its meadows and paths, deepens the sense of immersion in an authentic and vibrant area.
Local life is dynamic, driven by associations and events that mark the year. The friendliness of its residents further strengthens the village’s appeal and identity.
