Issoire is the centre of the Pays d'Issoire conurbation, and the sub-prefecture of the Puy-de-Dôme department. It is positioned at a natural crossroads between the peaks of the Monts Dore and Livradois, and at the confluence of the Allier and Couze Pavin rivers. With its reputation in the aluminium, aerospace and automotive manufacturing sectors, it is the economic capital of Val d'Allier. Covering an area of 1,969 hectares, Issoire lies between 360 and 560 metres above sea level, close to the Auvergne chain of volcanoes. Curved tiles, light-coloured slates, and blue or ochre-hued facades make up a city of narrow streets and small squares with a southern feel, overlooked by the abbey church of Saint-Austremoine, a masterpiece of Romanesque art and the pride of its 15,297 inhabitants. Issoire has always shown its ability to host and organise major popular events. For one day, the "Town that Moves" presents the natural, heritage and community assets that are characteristic of the quality of everyday life.
