Lemoine, first man below thirty minutes

169 riders were set to start stage 4 of the 69th Critérium du Dauphiné, a 23.5km individual time trial from La Tour-du-Pin to Bourgoin-Jallieu. Japan's Fumiyuki Beppu (Trek-Segafredo) was first to cross the line after he overtook Aleksejs Saramotins (Bora-Hansgrohe), the first rider in action. Norway's Amund Groendahl Jansen (LottoNL-Jumbo) set a best time before Cyril Lemoine (Cofidis) established the first performance below thirty minutes at the average speed of 47.36km/h.

Impey is back after a broken collarbone

South African time trial champion Daryl Impey (Orica-Scott) tested himself after he broke a collarbone during Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He was first to ride above 48km/h before Chad Haga (Sunweb) bettered his time. The next provisional best performance was the one of world champion Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin) who was close to 50km/h (49.79km/h) but the German wasn't completely satisfied with his race, which led to think that GC favorites might beat him.

Porte, the only one above 50km/h

It happened when Richie Porte (BMC Racing Team) crossed the line in 28.07 at an average speed of 50.14km/h. He won his duel with his former team leader Chris Froome (Sky) as the defending champion of the Critérium du Dauphiné rode 37 seconds slower than him, which came as a surprise since Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo) also clocked a slightly better time – the seventh best of the day – while Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) was an impressive third placed. Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) also made the top 10 and retained the yellow-blue jersey with an advantage of 27 seconds onto Porte ahead of stage 5 to Mâcon that will precede a weekend of three mountain stages.
